Hello teacher, librarian, bookseller or person who organises events!
One of my favourite aspects of being an author is getting to go out to schools to tell students about my books and my writing process.
I’m an experienced public speaker, to both small single class sizes all the way through 400+ seater events, in both Canada and the U.K. My fun, informative and interactive presentations can be adapted for all different high school/secondary school age groups, although I most often speak to Year 7/8 (Grades 7-8) and Sixth Form (Grade 12) students. My presentation can be fully adapted to any classroom, curriculum or event specification, but normally I cover topics such as:
- The recipe for a spellbinding read: where I go through all the ingredients (like ideas, inspiration, characters, plot, etc.) necessary to create my novels
- The publishing process: how do you go from writing a manuscript to getting it published? With my dual editor/writer hats, I can offer some real insider knowledge into what it’s really like to get your book into the hands of readers
- Worldbuilding: what does it take to build a captivating world? I share my tips and tricks to help students design a world that feels compelling and authentic
My rates are very reasonable, based on the Society of Author standard suggested author fees. I am happy to travel far and wide. But don’t just take my word for it! Here are some testimonials for my visits:
I just wanted to say thank you for your fabulous visit. The girls are still buzzing after a hugely popular week, and are busy writing their own stories. Learning Resource Centre Manager, Weatherhead High School, UK
Thank you so much for visiting us today and doing such brilliant presentations. I was really impressed by the way you engaged the boys and inspired so many questions from them… Two talks and lunch with the Book Club in this heat is no mean feat, you were wonderful and so inspiring. I will certainly buy some of your other books as there is a lot of interest in fantasy. Librarian, Dame Alice Owen’s School, UK
It was so interesting seeing how you put together your novels, and I know many of our students have been inspired to write their own stories. We hope to have you back next year for book two! Librarian, QE Girl’s School, UK
Thanks so much for giving such a well thought out, insightful introduction to The Potion Diaries, loved the potion to make the book! Jake Hope (award administrator) of the Lancashire Book Awards, UK
“Ms. Alward’s visit was very encouraging. As someone who wants to be an editor as much or even more than a writer, I found her tips and advice very straightforward and honest.”
“I loved that she was so open and willing to share her experiences with us.”
“I got so much out of this talk; most importantly this got me really excited to write.”
Feedback from Grade 12 students at Earl of March School, Ottawa, Canada
